The Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) engaged Grant Thornton to provide an independent review of the methodology and process applied by ABOR to calculate Education & General (E&G costs) per full-time equivalent student; identify other metrics to assess cost per student; and, conduct benchmarking of those metrics with peer institutions.

Utilizing publicly available IPEDS survey data from NCES.ed.gov and analytics data from DeltaCostProject.org, Grant Thornton and Tableau developed a dashboard to assess higher education cost and performance trends over time, across institutions. Grant Thornton investigated higher education cost and performance trends—particularly the increased financial burden trends for students—for further consideration by ABOR and Arizona State Legislature decision makers.

During this webinar, attendees saw firsthand how:

  • Grant Thornton was able to explore whether nominal, proportional, and per-unit cost changes are consistent across institutions over time
  • Using Tableau, the analysis can better inform higher education decision making
  • Federal, state, and local stakeholders may use such analysis to conduct year-to-year cost and performance comparisons, as well as benchmark against peer institutions prior to appropriating dollars
